Are you a Texpert Leader?
This week, we're looking at 'Texperts'
No, I didn’t spell it incorrectly, it’s a real thing!
I’m talking about those leaders who are Technically Expert in their thing – i.e., a “T-expert” leader.
And here I want to talk about two big issues for Texpert Leaders and their teams.
TRUST
Whether you have been in the role for years, or are fresh off the production line, one of the hardest things to do is to trust others to do what you once did (or worst case, still do).
This means it is almost impossible to enable the team to do it with enthusiasm and skill, whilst you step back and concentrate on more strategic issues.
And that means that even very experienced managers still end up demotivating their team, undermining them, or trying to impose unnecessary ways of working on a team that would otherwise be more than capable of making great decisions and creating really good work.
PERFECTIONISM
Often, Texpert Leaders feel that they need to know everything and should be seen to be all-capable.
They don’t, by the way.
And that leads to imposter syndrome, which can then create a struggle to be honest and vulnerable in front of others.
This means that your team don’t feel able to be vulnerable in front of you, so they, again, don’t step up and risk their job.
And why does this impact T-experts more.
Well, it is because you are so used to being great at what you do, that you often have a very particular opinion on the way in which things are done and should be done.
Those “shoulds” are a big problem because it means that you are the one that needs to be around to make decisions, especially if you don’t trust others to do it for you.
Not only that, it is hard to get started on making a change as you sit at your desk thinking “I know I need to do something, but what is it?”
And who do you have to speak to? Who can you trust?
But if you can trust the people around you, then once you have shown them the vision, and the plan, then you can allow them to make good decisions in the business, as you step back and focus on the strategy.
But it takes a change of mindset.
And it isn’t always easy to do without support, because it is easy to let ourselves off, to avoid taking those steps towards long term leverage of great resources.
It is easy to stay stuck in short-term thinking and be “safe” for now.
So, you need to find people you can trust, and who can support and challenge you.
And that’s what we do here at Think Be Do Leadership.
Coaching you to be the best leader you can be, so you can get that promotion, perform like a Superstar in the role and create great things as a team.
