LEADERSHIP

What’s The Critical Formula For Team Performance?

Mar 10, 2022

At Think Be Do Leadership the belief is that Leadership is not just a qualification!

It is a product of the behaviours we display that either help or hinder our teams to help us achieve our goals.

But what does that mean?

Sometimes companies think they can just send a manager on a course, and they will magically appear as a great leader.

But the problem is that often, there is no change or maybe a few signs here and there.

And that frustrates the team, because there is no difference in how they feel, and the boss because she or he thought their problems would be solved.

Then, because things don’t change quickly, we think things are broken and that they are just a bad leader.

Well, if we agree that L≠Q i.e. You don’t just go on a course and suddenly you are a leader (or a good one), and that we have to think, be and do something to create team performance then we can apply the same logic to a critical formula for Team Performance.

When followed, it means that anyone can improve your impact as a leader and create a successful team.

Tim Gallwey’s (The Inner Game of Work) formula of Performance = potential – interference is so very true.

But I want to take it further and look at that for team performance from the point of the leader.

And so, we have:

TP = p - CD - WD – DD

That means Team Performance = potential – (Can’t Do – Won’t Do – Don’t Do)

And here’s the thing:

Whilst people either can’t do, won’t do or just don’t want to do what we want them to do, it reduces the results they can achieve.

And, as a leader it is our job to work out which piece is missing for us and our teams.

So, if we can change:

Can’t Do >>> Can Do

Won’t Do >>> Will Do

Don’t want to do >>> Wants To

That would mean you have confident, capable, engaged people who are actively involved in your priorities and goals.

So, what do we do to make that change?

Well, that is where you and I come in because:

Leadership = Fᶜ x R x C∞

i.e., Leadership = Clarity & communication of our vision x Relationships built x Confidence of your staff to do the work

In other words, how we show up, gives people the commitment, confidence, and collaborative approach that they need to perform.

It gives them the Can do, Will Do and Wants to in your business.

So, these are the pieces of the jigsaw that you need to work on to create the best impact you can on your team.

Now if that sounds like a lot to implement, then click here to hear our 15-minute training which talks you through it.

Or, if you just want to get going with implementing this for yourself then message me and we can speak about how we can help you with that.
