Why being good at what you do is not enough to keep you in your job
Why being good at what you do is not enough to keep you in your job
When it comes to being a valuable asset to your company, leaders often make one very big mistake:
That is that they think that being good at what they do is enough to keep them in their job.
But this is a mistake because if you want to be invaluable to the business, you have to be more than that.
If you rest on your laurels of technical expertise, then you will likely be seen as just a “do-er”, not a strategist, not a leader, but a resource to use, with a job to do.
And you will be frustrated.
You won’t be promoted You will be overlooked You will likely miss out on the opportunities to take the lead and steer the business, even when you see the future and know the answers.
No one will be listening.
If you want to influence a wide range of people, including the board, your team, peers, clients and more, then you need to have conscious collaborative impact.
If you want a voice in decision making and influencing strategic direction, then you need more than just an ability to tweak and tinker to a fine degree.
You need to be able to Speak Up and Lead!
When you are able to articulate your value and share your knowledge in a way that people will sit up and listen, then you will find that you become that invaluable asset that your peers will come to, the board will listen to, and your team will hang on your every word for inspiration and vision.
So, which would you like to be?
Irrelevant and invisible OR an Impactful, Invaluable Asset to the business?
So, what do we have to do to make the change?
There are three elements you need to get right.
Instead of uninteresting, unknown, and unremarkable we need to be:
· Relevant and interesting
· Confident and connected
· Positively impactful
Relevant and Interesting
What we speak about, why we are sharing it, and the level at which we pitch it is imperative in how it will be received. Getting it wrong will overwhelm or confuse people and they will stop listening. They will not buy in to your ideas if you don’t help them see what is in it for me and then help them to digest it in the right sized chunks.
Confident and Connected
Understanding our audience and building relationships could never be more important than when we want to influence people to take on board our ideas or do the thing we want them to do. To have engaged people, collaborating with you and the team will only come when people feel understood and listened to. To be confident in developing an understanding of others, we have to really get to find out what motivates them, how they communicate, they way they think and what they need to perform. When you do this, your team and those around will gladly engage with you and your ideas.
Positively Impactful
How you show up at work has a massive impact on how others react to you and therefore your results. It can be a virtuous or a vicious cycle. From my days as a police inspector, I remember the phrase “Every contact leaves a trace.” And it is so true in all relationships, especially in business. So, we need to be conscious of the behaviours we display and the impact we are having before we can design the behaviours and therefore the impact we have. That requires actively looking for responses and feedback and acting upon the results.
Within those 3 pillars, there are 9 elements which dig into how we achieve those pillars.
In this link I have created a short (18 minute) live video to break down the 3 pillars and the 9 elements this week which you can view here: Click here
