Why CTOs are a threat to a business.
Clever, knowledgeable, and full of ideas on how to move the technology of a business forward?
But sometimes it just doesn’t seem to work?
The message doesn’t get through?
Frustrated because your ideas aren’t accepted by the board, feeling like an outsider in a clique of non-believers, or just ignored or misunderstood maybe.
And the more frustrated we get, the more we are seemingly unheard.
And it can even get to that passive aggressive point where people are actively avoiding us, and the underlying issue.
But what is going on?
Well, one thing it could be is that you need to Simplify, to Amplify your voice and your impact.
So often, people who have a lot of information, a lot of passion and a lot of ideas are a threat to others.
Not because you are horrid or mean, but because of what you represent.
You represent change, uncertainty, confusion (if you are not careful), and more work.
And no one likes that!
And unless you can overcome this, then people will be avoiding opening your emails, having that coffee, or letting you speak at meetings etc.
We might think it is because they don’t have all the information, or they are just not getting it. And therefore, we give them more, and more, and maybe even more.
Which is the opposite of what we actually need to do.
Doing it this way just overwhelms and frightens them off. It makes them think twice about the project and feel that the change is too complex, too difficult, and overwhelming.
When we know it could be the answer to their problems.
And they are probably busy already, so they might assume that there isn’t the capability or time to start this project.
You become a bind to them, rather than the inspiring change agent you know you are.
What we need to do is step into their shoes, and ask ourselves what do they need to make the decision, how do they need it communicated to them, and how do they think?
When we do that instead, we start to realise exactly what part of the information, they need and how we should give it to them.
So, then they are more ready to hear it (or see, or read etc).
It is now in a way that they can digest, that they can manage and process.
We are then seen as great communicators, rather than just knowledgeable boffins who speak in tongues, that are unknown to the rest of the world.
We can then get the point (the right point, not every point) and focus on the things that matter to the person listening.
We can get rid of all the fluff, waffle and massive detail that we “could” give them (but it is not relevant).
We can then package what we have in a way that summarises the reason why they should listen, and what’s in it for them, before we give them anything else.
This way we have them begging for more, not running away!
